With Borderlands 3 Coming, Dev Opens New Office in Quebec

It's not just Fallout 4 developer Bethesda that's expanding to Canada. Borderlands and Battleborn developer Gearbox Software today announced its first international expansion. The Texas-based independent studio has opened a office in Quebec called Gearbox Studio Quebec.

The studio's goal is "enhancing Gearbox Software's mission to entertain the world." It's now hiring developers to work on the studio's first game, with the expectation that the team will grow to "full AAA production capability" throughout 2016, the company said in a statement.

"We are fortunate that there is a lot of demand on us to deliver our brand of interactive entertainment within the powerful franchises we have at Gearbox Software and the challenge for us is growing to meet this demand," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said. "As part of our strategy we have already successfully built an expanded all new headquarters in Frisco, Texas . We now look ahead to another key and exciting step which is our commitment towards our all-new Gearbox Studio Quebec where we strive to team up with some incredible talent in the world of video game development outside of Texas to help us build fun and exciting video games within our tent-pole brands."

Gearbox Studio Quebec will be headed up by Sebastien Caisse, whose official title is co-studio head and director of operations. Previously, he worked at Quebeco Media and Squeeze Animation. The other studio lead is Pierre-Andre Dery, who formerly worked as art director at Activision on games in the Skylanders, Spider-Man, and World of Warcraft.

There is no word yet on what Gearbox's new Canadian office is working on. In media interviews earlier this year, Pitchford has talked about making new Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem games.

Gearbox's next big game is Battleborn, which arrives in May 2016 for consoles and PC. The developer is also working on a third core Borderlands game.
