Assassin's Creed Star Michael Fassbender on Playing an "Outsider"

Now that production has wrapped on Assassin's Creed, star Michael Fassbender has been discussing his role as hero Callum Lynch in the forthcoming game adaptation.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal to promote the biopic Jobs, Fassbender hinted at what fans could expect from his performance. Lynch is one of two roles that the actor will play in the movie, the other being his 15th century ancestor Aguilar. "He is an outsider," he said. "He's been institutionalized from his early teens. He's a little bit of a lost soul of sorts. He starts to identify lineage and where he comes from in a way."

Fassbender also spoke about the overall experience of shooting the movie, which is set for release in December this year, "It was great," he said. "It was a huge learning experience. To be a producer on it as well was very educational. I think we've got something special. I think we've done something original in this genre."

Assassin's Creed is directed by Justin Kurzel, who recently helmed Macbeth, which also featured Fassbender in the lead role. His Macbeth co-star Marion Cotillard will also appear, alongside Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Ubisoft has at least six movies in the pipeline. In addition to Assassin's Creed, the Paris-based publisher is making movies based on its Far Cry, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon franchises. In all instances, Ubisoft will retain some level of creative control through its Ubisoft Motion Pictures group.

Assassin's Creed arrives in cinemas on December 21, 2016.
