After Xbox One Outsells PS4 in July, Microsoft Marketing Boss Optimistic About August

The Xbox One outsold the rival PlayStation 4 during July 2016 in the United States, bringing about an end to Sony's lengthy monthly win streak. Now, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg says he's optimistic about sales numbers for August, in part because the Xbox One S is already pacing ahead of expectations.

"We saw tons of momentum coming out of E3. It was a huge show for us. We announced a lot. Two new consoles. We showcased a huge games lineup, a lot of Xbox Live innovation. It's great to see the July NPD as a result," Greenberg told Windows Central. "We had a really good response coming out of that. In August, I think we're going to sell a lot of consoles."

Greenberg was flat-out asked if he thought Microsoft would "win" August by outselling PS4 again. He didn't directly answer this, instead saying Microsoft is interested in talking about its business independently.

"We just kind of focus on what we're doing and how we're performing," he said. "We're really pleased with how the Xbox One S has been performing. It has exceeded our expectations. We're trying to make as many as we can, as fast as we can, as we try to get these new bundles out to the market. We'll see, we'll see how it turns out."

The Xbox One S launched at the beginning of August, while more bundles went on sale just this week, including a system that came packaged with Madden NFL 17. There are also some pretty solid deals on Xbox One S systems right now, which could help sales improve even more.

On the subject of the 2 TB Xbox One S model, which has sold out at a number of stores, Greenberg said it's his belief that this may be the least popular of all Xbox One S systems. However, there is definitely a crowd of "core" gamers who are interested in this model with the larger hard drive.

"Believe it or not, most consumers won't buy the 2 TB version, but we know for a lot of our core fans, that's what they want," he explained.

Although the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in July in the US, Nintendo's 3DS outsold them both. As for August's figures, the NPD Group is expected to release them in September.
