FIFA 17 players awarded free kit and crest, so they can show respect for a team devastated by an airplane disaster

FIFA 17 players can honour fallen athletes by donning the Chapecoense kit.

FIFA 17 players have been awarded the crest and kit of Brazilian football club Chapecoense for free, following the deaths of most of the club's players in an airplane disaster.

The tribute was shared by Reddit user psgabraham. In the notification, EA Sports suggests FIFA 17 players wear the kit “in support of the friends, family and fans of Chapecoense”.

The free crests cannot be traded in FIFA 17, but many players are attempting to hock their duplicates – possibly in an attempt to leverage the tragedy for personal gain. Pretty low! It's probably a good thing Chapecoense players aren't available in FIFA Ultimate Team.

The Chapecoense team was onboard a flight that crashed in Colombia this week, on its way to a Copa Sudamericana (South American Cup) final – the biggest match in the club's history. According to the BBC, just six of the 77 crew and passengers aboard the plane survived the tragedy.

19 Chapecoense players were killed, two remain in critical condition, and one has had a leg amputated with a possibility he may lose the other, too. Atletico Nacional, due to play Chapecoense in the final, has offered to concede the match, and Brazilian teams have called on local football authorities to prevent the club's deregulation in the wake of the disaster.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined, and Colombian authorities are still working to recover the bodies of the players and the 52 other victims of the crash. Brazil is in the midst of multiple days of national mourning.
