Dark, R-Rated Power Rangers Series Proposed By New Castlevania Show Boss

As Power Rangers is being reimagined with a new movie, one of the people responsible for the newly announced Castlevania show is looking to reboot the Power Rangers TV series in a new way.

Producer Adi Shankar shared some details on the project with Polygon, although it should be noted that it hasn't yet been sold to a network (and it's unclear where rights owner Saban stands on it). Shankar said it's "a complete retelling of the first three seasons" of the classic Power Rangers show, albeit one that features a more serialized story. He also described it as "really f***ing dark. Darker than any other Power Rangers series."

It's not the first time Shankar has explored the concept. Back in 2015, he released a violent 12-minute short film based on Power Rangers that was well-received. You can watch it below.

A script for the first season of the new series is in the works, and Shankar hopes it can debut in the next year and a half. He said that unspecified networks have expressed interest, but that he aims to bring it to Netflix. "The world we live in now has disrupted the idea of what entertainment is and Netflix gets it," he said.

Later this year, Netflix will be home to another project Shankar is working on: an adaptation of Castlevania. The first part of its debut season is due out sometime in 2017, and it also features the involvement of comic veteran Warren Ellis. Shankar has likened it to Game of Thrones and said it will feature R-rated material.

As for the new Power Rangers movie, which is unrelated to the new TV series, it's due out in theaters on March 24. You can watch the latest trailer here.
