TUTTO BENE GRAZIE !

A Haunting Dutchman
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 30 maggio 2023
Many Thanks to the supplier who shipped this CD set to me in wonderful shape and early enough to add to my monthly opera group. Most of my group members had not heard this particular performance before and i was able to highlight it with them, much to their delight.
Although I have read some reservations over the years about the von Karajan Fliegende Hollander, I can truly say that I was wholly engrossed in this performance, from start to that thrilling climax, and so glad that I decided at this late date to add it to the other seven versions in my collection. Von Karajan stirs up a sumptuous orchestral palette throughout, with an engrossing concoction of nuances in the overture. As for the singers, Jose van Dam has a soft approach to his role, but always with a sense of dramatic world-weariness. Dunja Vezovic, a mezzo tackling a rather high-lying dramatic soprano role, had me hooked from the start, her Seaman Ballad, sung with a powerful edge. And of course, there would be tense moments in the highest notes of her duet with the Dutchman, but her interpretive flair was always hard at work. Kurt Moll was a delight as Daland, as expected, and Peter Hofmann gave a real romantic stroke to his scene with Senta and, of course, his Act III ballad was truly lovely. Thomas Moser beautifully nuances his way through the opening Steuermann ballad. The chorus was on point, with the Act III "haunted ship" scene a magnificent highlight of the performance.
I will always regard my three favorite Hollanders with a sense of "how could there be any better" (London/Rysanek for Dorati, Stewart/Jones for Bohm and Fischer-Dieskau/Schech for Konwitschny), but von Karajan's product has now found a soft spot on my heart, as well as some of my colleagues who might have dismissed it/

A wonderful opera
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 17 novembre 2023
This is Wagner’s first opera that he composed according to his own style, after ditching the classical Italian style he was composing before. In the Flying Dutchman, Wagner discovered his real self as a composer with his distinct music, and took off from then on.
This is a beautiful opera to listen to, with wonderful tunes and powerful singing. The orchestra and the voices give it justice, and the recording is excellent.

Wagner: Der Fliegende Hollander - Karajan
Recensito in Spagna il 22 marzo 2018

Shivers the Timbers!
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 23 settembre 2021
From the opening notes, this recording blasts you into an ocean storm. The energy never lets up from there. Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic raised the roof with this one, and it's a joy to be along for the ride.
There's is a good bit of carping among some of the other reviews here about the quality of the singing. In fact, the vocals are more than just good enough and in no way detract from the orchestra.
Remember that there is no such thing as the perfect recording. If you want a Darn Good recording of the Dutchman, then look no further. This is one to listen to again and again. It's a record of von Karajan and the Berlin Phil at their finest and a perfect introduction for those new to Wagner. Buy it.
