5,0 su 5 stelle Great game

This is the classic that started it all; one of the best game series of all time. The game that I bought was used, but it really looked almost new. These are great games to play by anyone.

5,0 su 5 stelle Worth the Wait
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 18 gennaio 2013
When I ordered Professor Layton and the Curious Village, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the package that the game came in. I waited by the door eagerly for over a week before finally contacting Amazon's customer service department, only to be told that there was a problem with the shipping of my order. Frustrated and angry, I was pretty much ready to give up on the game and do something else instead (especially considering that Amazon "can't" refund my money to my gift cards instead of to my credit card). Because I'm interested in puzzles, however, I decided to wait it out. After a ridiculous amount of arguing with Amazon and ranting at the U.S. Postal Service, my package finally arrived, and I could not wait to get the game into my 3DS and play it.

The game impressed me instantly, as I'm not accustomed to the level of animation and voice acting that makes Professor Layton and the Curious Village such a wonderful game. I was thrilled when I heard the voice acting, and I felt that this was a good way to get to know the characters. All in all, I've never played another video game that included characters as richly developed as those in Professor Layton. Layton and Luke are an incredible team with distinct personalities, and the amount of writing effort that went into this game is significant. The consistency of the characterizations allows me to develop trust in the game and in its story.

With regard to the story, my only genuine complaint is the fact that it's too short. I felt as though the story was progressing with good pacing, more information being revealed at regular intervals to allow the player to get an idea of what the mysteries were and how they would be solved, and then the game suddenly put a serious rush on getting from point A to point B so quickly that I was left wondering whether there wasn't more that should have gone into the middle of it. All in all, the story was excellent but perhaps just a bit too short for my taste. I enjoy longer games that develop a story over time, and while Professor Layton and the Curious Village kept me going, once I begin to work on the tower mystery, I was too close to being done with the game to continue to engage with the story and I had stopped caring about the Golden Apple mystery because I was obsessed with Dahlia and Flora. I would have liked to have the story engage my interest in Layton's reasons for going to St. Mystere more than it did.

All that being said, and the story itself aside, the puzzles were mostly fantastic. As another reviewer indicated, however, there was some concern for me over the fact that they don't start out easy and get progressively harder. Furthermore, the rating system for the puzzles (picarats) is a bit tricky, but not for the reasons one might assume. In my case, I find certain types of puzzles a good deal easier than others (almost all logic puzzles and most spacial reasoning puzzles) and others incredibly difficult (just about anything to do with math). Labeling a puzzle 10 picarats doesn't mean that it's easy for me if it includes a lot of math to find the solution. Labeling a logic problem 90 isn't going to stump me because this is what I'm good at. I had several of the higher level puzzles solved within seconds and several lower-level puzzles left me rushing to a walkthrough for the solutions because I didn't understand the clues.

While I have these complaints, I've given this game a five star rating because it compelled me to purchase the next game in the series and because I know that I will play it again to see if I can improve my score and finish the game with more hint coins than I finished it with the last time. I will personally play this again and again, but for those who feel that solving a mystery takes the fun out of the mystery, you may wish to rent the game rather than purchasing it.
