Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Radeon HD 6870 151 Watts
Difference: 71 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6870 should be 87% quicker than the Radeon HD 7770 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 62400 (87%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 is much (approximately 26%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7770. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10400 (26%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 is quite a bit (more or less 80%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 7770, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12800 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

Are you using pice 2 or pcie 3

?????????????????

Aaron says:

It would have to be PCI-e 2.0 or 2.1 because the 6970 doesn't support PCI-e 3.0, and the theoretical benchmarks are not dependent on PCI-e speed. Anyway, you should get the 6870 instead of the 7770, the 68xx series has the BEST price to performance ratio of ANY AMD/ATI radeon HD graphics card.
