Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Spinoff Isn’t Happening Anytime Soon — Here’s Why
For the foreseeable future, HBO’s lineup will be like Westeros during the Long Summer: No sign of Snow.
Game of Thrones‘ reportedly in-the-works spinoff centered on Kit Harington‘s character is nowhere near to getting an official go-ahead from the network, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys recently said. In fact, none of the saga’s potential offshoots are.
“We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring,” he said, referring to the series order for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is based on Thrones author George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.
However, the immensely popular show’s other potential spinoffs — none of which the premium cabler has officially recognized, we should point out — have a Long Night ahead of them… if they ever see production at all.
“I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything,” Bloys added, “but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”
In 2021, Bloys stressed that the Game of Thrones spinoff concepts that would move forward would be the ones that are the strongest based on several measures.
“Obviously, we know George has this incredible world with all of this really rich and complicated history and all of these characters,” he told TVLine at the time. “So we’ve been trying to be thoughtful about what are the stories that are worth telling. What would be exciting? What would fans love?” he said. “Dunk and Egg is one of those, but not the only one.”
Martin made news in June 2023 by confirming that Harington would reprise his Thrones role in a series about Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen. He said the show’s working title was Snow, and that Harington was deeply involved in the project. Harington’s co-star, Emilia Clarke, later said that he had told her about it “and I know it exists. It’s happening.”
Other Thrones spinoffs reportedly in the works at HBO include a prequel focused on the reign of Aegon I Targaryen; a Nymeria-centric series; and a drama about Velaryon.

As someone who don’t work in the industry I do not get how it works like what is the point of constantly announcing projects just to not happen, its being done with got franchise, with star wars franchise, many others. And no this has nothing to do with the strikes this practice has been going on for years now, like I get that there is changing ones mind but keep it closed dont put the fans through it cause its getting our hopes up for nothing.
It’s how the industry works. Film and TV production budgets involve a massive amount of resources and personnel. These aren’t exactly things you keep under wraps unless the studio wants to start throwing NDAs, which would be highly unusual and not very worthwhile just for the greenlight and preproduction process. So the word inevitably gets out about these productions and it makes more sense to set the table themselves with a small press release and such.
Its just bizzare how that works, like they will throw out announcements of projects that arent even determined to happen but for example higher ups forced andrew garfield and tobey mcguire to say they arent in spiderman no way home cause their ndas forbid it despite it being leaked they were in it.
Studios can often do that to try to gauge interest in a project or drum up online chatter and support to prove to a network, studio, or investors that there’s support or a large audience for a potential show.
So its just there to get responses and nothing more?

They will only green light a new series if it has new actors. Even though a Jon Snow series would be a hit, the legacy actors are too expensive. You have to think through your wallet more than ever.
Sure… except there’s no way Kit Harington is more expensive than Paddy Considine or Matt Smith. He hasn’t exactly been burning up screens since GoT.
As a fan favorite I still think this gets made. Jon Snow was probably the most popular character on the show, him or Arya.

I would watch Snow and anything doing with the Knights Watch with Kit Harrington.
I have really been looking forward to seeing a new series with Kit Harrington in it as Jon Snow. Would really love to see his sisters in it somehow too.
