Captain America: Civil War Writers on Why Nick Fury Didn't Appear
Although Captain America: Civil War brings together many of the most popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were a few notable absences. The lack of Thor and Hulk was explained by the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but one character not accounted for was former SHIELD boss Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Now the film's writers have spoken about why Fury was nowhere to be seen.
In an interview with the LA Times, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that ultimately they didn't want to force Fury to take one side of the film's conflict over another. "It felt like one too many possible opinions," Markus said. "We didn't want him to take one side or the other, because that's not his place in the universe.
"And then we didn't want another, 'Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?' It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for.
"He's the guy who put it together. He's been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they're supposed to be without that governing voice. Um… and they didn't do that good of a job."
Nevertheless, the pair hinted that Fury would return for the upcoming two part Avengers: Infinity War, which they are currently writing. "I would think ," teased McFeely. "Don't you assume you'll see everybody in Infinity War?"
Last week, Civil War and Infinity War director Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that the tiles of the next Avengers movies will change before they are released. Despite filming the two movies back-to-back, the brothers have stated that they are in fact separate stories.
"The intention is we will change it, we just haven't come up with the titles yet," Joe Russo told Uproxx. "But, yes, we will change it. And, yes, that is a scoop: we will retitle them."
Avengers: Infinity War Part One--or whatever it will be called--arrives in 2018, with Part Two following in 2019.
