Captain America: Civil War About to Pass $1 Billion, Joining Only 24 Other Movies Ever
Marvel superhero movie Captain America: Civil War is expected to pass $1 billion at the global box office later today, Deadline reports. The movie reached $982 million on Wednesday to become the highest-grossing film of 2016 and added $9 million more on Thursday to bring its total to $991 million.
After Friday, it is poised to clear the $1 billion threshold. We'll report back later this weekend with a box office recap to let you know where the film stands.
To date, Civil War has made $314.3 million in the United States and $676.7 million from international markets. If it does indeed pass $1 billion tonight, it will have reached that figure 24 days after release.
Civil War opened in April internationally before coming to the US on May 6.
Other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have reached $1 billion globally include The Avengers ($1.518 billion), The Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 billion), and Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion). Only 24 movies in history have made $1 billion or more at the global box office--Disney, which owns Marvel, is behind nine of them.
Civil War's big success has pushed the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe past $10 billion across 13 films in nine years. It has also helped Disney have a great start to the year, as Civil War and Zootopia are now the No. 1 and No. 2 movies of 2016, while The Jungle Book is also in the top five.
