Deus Ex "Mechanical Apartheid" Video Sets Stage for Mankind Divided

Publisher Square Enix has aired a live-action trailer that outlines the narrative for its upcoming action game, Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

The four-minute short, which does not feature any gameplay footage, carries the running theme of a "mechanical apartheid"--referencing the racial segregation that had plagued South African politics for fifty years during the twentieth century. You can watch it above.

A montage-like cut of different scenes, such as news reports of technological advances, as well as rioting and civil unrest, piece together a story of how humankind has evolved with prosthetic limbs and electronic augmentations. It also shows how society gradually segregates itself between those with augmentations and those without.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will release on August 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

In the past 12 months, little has been said about the project, aside from the occasional trailer and an announcement of its delay.
