Star Wars Rogue One: Everything We Know About The Characters

The cast and crew of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story recently took to the stage at this year's Star Wars Celebration, and plenty of new details were revealed (or confirmed) about the upcoming Star Wars spinoff film. We learnt about many of the characters, received official confirmation of a returning villain from the original Star Wars trilogy, and may have been treated to a huge spoiler. Read on to find out more!

Jyn Erso

Much was already known about the lead character of Rogue One. Jyn has been a loner for most of her life, and has been living on the streets since the age of 15. Her experience with crime and the underworld is apparently what entices the Rebellion to recruit her for the vital mission of stealing the plans for the Empire's new superweapon, the Death Star. Actress Felicity Jones says Erso is someone who comes into Rogue One as a fully-formed character due to her rough and complicated upbringing.

Captain Cassian Andor

Played by Diego Luna, Andor is an Alliance officer that is assigned to work with Jyn Erso during the operation to steal the original Death Star's plans. At Star Wars Celebration, Luna said the team initially comprises of just Erso and Andor, but eventually grows to include more characters.

K-2SO

K-2SO is an Imperial security droid that Andor captured and reprogrammed, and the two are now inseparable friends. Actor Alan Tudyk, who performs the role of K-2SO, said at Star Wars Celebration that his character can be brash and a little abrasive, speaking his mind at all times.

Bodhi Rook

Rook is Rogue One's lead pilot, but from the details actor Riz Ahmed divulged at Star Wars Celebration, Rook was previously a pilot for the Galactic Empire, before he started to question his involvement with the gigantic evil organisation. Rook hails from the planet Jedha, which is currently under Imperial occupation. Rogue One director Gareth Evans describes Jedha as "the Mecca of Star Wars," a place where people travel to for "pilgrimages."

Chirrut Imwe (POSSIBLE SPOILERS WITHIN)

SKIP THIS SLIDE IF YOU'RE WARY OF SPOILERS.

Chirrut Imwe is a blind warrior, and a firm believer in the Force at a time when the Jedi are supposedly extinct. While he's not actually a Jedi, he is still a formidable warrior, and was described by actor Donnie Yen as being a "thinker." And--possibly a huge, unintended spoiler accidentally spilled by Jiang Wen (who plays Baze Malbus) during Star Wars Celebration--Imwe sounds like he's going to die during the events of Rogue One.

Baze Malbus

Baze Malbus, portrayed by Jiang Wen, is a firm friend of Chirrut Imwe. But while Imwe chooses the path of spirituality, Malbus is more direct, preferring big guns and direct action to achieve his goals. In fact, Wen's only comment about his character during Star Wars Celebration was that "he has a big gun."

Saw Gerrera

The character of Saw Gerrera first appeared in the Star Wars universe in The Clone Wars animated series, and is a guerilla fighter who has long battled against the Galactic Empire. In Rogue One, Gerrera represents the more extreme end of the Rebellion, and seems to be willing to go further than anyone to achieve his goals.

Director Orson Krennic

During Star Wars Celebration, Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn cheekily described Krennic as an "an Australian kind of villain." Outside of this jokey reference, it is known that Krennic leads a squad of Deathtroopers, and is an ambitious officer trying to move up the ranks of the Empire.

Galen Erso

Apart from his relationship with Jyn Erso (he's her father), very little is known about Galen Erso apart from the fact he's a prominent scientist within the Star Wars universe. Actor Mads Mikkelsen described Erso during Star Wars Celebration as a "person of interest," a scientist who had invented something so beautiful and fantastic "that it might change the universe."

Darth Vader

Darth Vader has been officially confirmed for Rogue One, though details of his exact involvement with the plot are obviously being kept secret. He will once again be voiced by James Earl Jones.
