Spelunky 2 coming to PS4 and Steam, wave goodbye to your free time

The original indie obsession is back. Batten the hatches: Spelunky 2 is inbound.

Spelunky 2 has been on many a wishlist for years now, and PlayStation's Paris Games Week stream delivered at last.

Details are light at the the moment, but Spelunky creator Derek Yu said in a post on the PlayStation Blog that he waited as long as he did because of the “chaos” of having a young daughter.

“Parenthood has had a big influence on Spelunky 2's story and themes. There are similarities between being a parent and working on a sequel,” Yu wrote.

“Both involve a lot of reflecting on the past as well as thinking about the future. With Spelunky 2, we get a chance to examine in depth what makes Spelunky unique and draw it out even more. At the same time, we need to move forward and take some risks with new ideas, keeping the series fresh for longtime fans and for ourselves.”

The sequel has been in the works for “a couple of years now” at BlitWorks, the studio that helped port Spelunky to PS3, Vita and finally PS4. Musician Eirik Suhrke returns for the score, but Spelunky lead programmer Andy Hull is busy working on his own game, Dunk Lords, sowon't be involved.

Release date and details of new and returning features are expected in the months to come. Check out the trailer below.

As you'd expect given the announcement timing, Spelunky 2 is coming to PS4 ahead of other consoles, although it will also arrive on Steam at the same time.
