Fallout 4 Mod Lets You Play as Dogmeat or Other Post-Apocalyptic Canines

Maybe you've played Fallout 4 and wished you could trade places with your canine companion Dogmeat. Now you can, thanks to a newly released mod for the open-world RPG.

The mod, called "Be The Dog -- Playable Dogs," was created by Nexusmods user Abbalovesyou. It lets you explore post-apocalyptic Boston as Dogmeat or some of the other dogs seen in the wasteland.

While you can't shoot guns, dogs aren't defenseless in Fallout 4--far from it. This mod gives dogs a number of attack options, including two forms of biting and two further power attacks. These include a jumping bite (initiated while standing still) and a running jumping bite (via VG247).

The mod isn't without issues, Abbalovesyou explains. For one thing, the Pip-Boy tool does not work while in first-person view, so you'll need to access your inventory through other means. Additionally, if you play as a dog at the game's start, the game can crash after you touch your baby and chat with your spouse.

Full installation instructions for this mod can be found here on Nexusmods. A video showcasing this mod is available above, from YouTube user Mephykuns.

In other Fallout 4 news about dogs, Dogmeat won Best Video Game Dog at The Dog Awards recently.

As for the game itself, Fallout 4's first paid add-on, Automatron, arrives on March 22 across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. You can read this post to find out exactly when the content will unlock.
